Marico Oog 2-4 September 2004
I took a group (22 in total excluding my family) of AngloGold Ashanti's HR department for a couple of dives at Marico Oog.
We were shocked when we saw that a fire had swept through the area and destroyed all the reeds around Die Oog - it looked very bare and small. Despite this and the unusual cold weather, the water was a warmish 20 degrees which made for pleasant diving, as did the viz of 20 meters plus until a certain JHB dive school mucked it up. Diving took place throughout the day and Ian Heyns and son, Nicholas, completed the first of their Open Water qualifying dives. Myself, son Izak, Gareth Southward and Chris Wiseman did a night dive and were rewarded by being able to see the stars from the grid at 5 meters. The elusive eels were spotted on several occasions by different divers.
Most people packed up on Sunday morning early, without diving, but a few die-hards, like Peet COetzee and kids, Michelle and Bertus Strauss and Gawie Herhold and Hannes Vorster, braved the early morning cold for enjoyable, high viz dives.
