Miracle Waters 21-22 August 2004

To say we were surprised by the cold water, is the understatement of the year - 16 degrees at best. Despite this, Wilme Steenekamp and I did the first of her advanced dives (Night) at 21H30 on Friday night and were rewarded for our stupidity by a great dive (viz good, lots of crabs, a couple of fish and total solitude). We waited patiently until 11H00 on Saturday for the water to warm up - this, unfortunately, did not happen and Wilme and I did a cold deep dive to 26.5 m. Once again viz was nice although fish life was sparse. Due to other commitments, Wilme bade us goodbye as Jacoline Linde started preparing for her first dive, Navigation which, after a short dive and surface interval, was followed by the Enriched Air dive.

Louis de Bruin, fiancee, Antoinette Lombard and two non diving friends arrived just after this. Louis and Antoinette did a quick dive to get used to the cold before Louis joined Jacoline and myself on her Night Dive which, despite the cold, was very enjoyable.

On Sunday, Antoinette completed her Advanced with the Deep dive (also Jacoline's 4th dive). Once again the water was very cold and we did not linger around, as we sometimes do to get extra bottom time. An hour later Jacoline and I were back in the water for the final dive of her course, Wreck. Having had aspirations to become an architect, Jacoline's 3-D rendition of the bus was the best I have ever seen from any student.

Despite the cold weather, a successful weekend; spent alternating between freezing and defrosting in front of a fire.
